THE THREE MUSKETEERS
In his novel «The Three Musketeers», published in 1844, Alexandre Dumas confronts us with several mysterious questions: why this title when the novel’s real protagonist, the officer cadet D’Artagnan, ultimately becomes the fourth musketeer? What does the famous phrase 'One for all and all for one' if one applies the rules of mathematics?
«We take these literary inconsistencies as a pretext to carry out a duel with the material. We wish to untangle and expose the mechanics of the novel. We are interested in a verbal but also highly physical confrontation. Dumas sees life as a constant struggle for survival, one that has to be fought with the gloves off and no regard for loses. In this way he tells of the human lives of his time, people who were continually forced to look all manner of danger in the eye and seek out an opponent who is prepared to fight to the death.» (Antonio Latella, Federico Bellini)The renowned Italian director Antonio Latella, who has alread presented four productions at Theater Basel (including Oedipus, Caligula, La Cenerentola) will stage Alexandre Dumas’ novel in his own adaptation with four actors on the Kleine Bühne.
