The RIG was founded as an association in 1993 with the aim of anchoring the three art form institution Theater Basel within the population beyond the boundaries of the canton in which it is located, Basel City. At the time the impetus for its foundation came from the Basel government’s plans to cut the theatre’s funding. The RIG wished to advocate a financial model that did more to include the surrounding area both in Switzerland and in neighbouring countries. In the intervening period the RIG has evolved into a community of enthusiastic friends of the theatre who follow the creation of opera, theatre and ballet with interest and sympathy while retaining a broader perspective. This includes special events to facilitate glimpses behind the scenes and direct contact with the artists who appear on stage as well as communal visits to other theatres and theatregoing tours.Further information: www.rig-theater-basel.ch
